Custom Glass Table Tops: Protect the Heirloom Table Before Holiday Hosting Season

Every November, somewhere in Northwest Arkansas, a hot casserole dish meets a great-grandmother's walnut dining table, and every December we get the call about whether anything can be done about the white ring. The cheaper call is the one made before Thanksgiving: a custom-cut glass top that lets the table host thirty years of holidays without collecting a single scar. This is one of the fastest, most affordable jobs our Bentonville shop does, and mid-November is the deadline to have one in place for the big meal.

What a Proper Table Top Is

A protective glass top is not a sheet of window glass laid on wood. The right spec looks like this:

• Thickness: 1/4 inch is the workhorse for protecting an existing table top. Freestanding glass tables and heavy-use surfaces step up to 3/8 or 1/2 inch.
• Tempered where it matters. For family dining tables, we recommend tempered glass. It resists thermal shock from warm dishes far better than annealed glass and meets the same safety standards, ANSI Z97.1, that govern other household glass. It costs a bit more and cannot be re-cut later, so we confirm dimensions carefully.
• Edgework: a polished flat edge with a small chamfer is standard; a beveled edge dresses up formal tables. Eased corners keep hips and small heads safe.
• Low-iron glass if the table beneath is a light wood or painted finish. Standard glass carries a faint green tint that can shift the color of a whitewashed or maple surface; ultra-clear low-iron glass shows the wood true.
• Clear bumpers: small silicone discs between glass and wood prevent sliding, allow the wood to breathe, and stop trapped moisture from clouding the finish.

Beyond the Dining Room

Once people get one glass top, they tend to order more, because the same protection works all over the house: coffee tables that host board games, dresser tops in kids' rooms, desks (a favorite for the home offices that are now permanent fixtures in Bentonville and Fayetteville houses), sideboards that catch hot serving dishes, and patio tables that need a replacement pane after a windstorm. We also cut glass shelving to size, polished and tempered where spans require it.

How Ordering Works

For rectangles, careful measurements are enough: length, width, and a check of the corners for square. For ovals, rounds with aprons, and shaped antiques, we template the top in kraft paper or ask you to, and we cut to the template. Fabrication on annealed glass runs a few days; tempered adds about a week because panels go out for heat treatment and, remember, tempered cannot be trimmed afterward, so the template has to be right. Order by mid-November and you are covered for Thanksgiving; order by the first week of December and you are covered for Christmas dinner.
